The Format

Teams

  • All players will be split evenly into two teams. The Red Team or the Blue Team.

  • Each team will have the same number of golfers.

  • Because this is the first annual event, team captains will be chosen before the event begins.

  • Team captains can make pairings and strategy decisions.

  • Teams are PERPETUAL. If you are chosen to be on a team, you are on that team for life (or until the rules allow for trading team members).

The Game

The Game format will be Two-Player Team Best Ball.

How Each Group Works

  • Golfers will play in groups of four players: 2 players from the Red Team vs. 2 players from the Blue Team. If there is an odd number of pairs, we will have 2 groups of threesomes that will play 2v1.

  • Each pair of teammates forms a two-player team for that round.

  • Everyone plays their own golf ball the entire time.

  • You do NOT take turns hitting or share a ball.

What “Best Ball” Means

  • On every hole, each two-player team looks at the two individual net scores from their teammates and takes the best score of the two for that hole.

    • Example: If one player makes a net 6 and the partner makes a net 4, the team score is a 4.

What “Net Score” Means

  • Every player receives strokes (handicap shots) on certain holes based on their handicap.

    • The course handicaps each hole 1-18 with 1 being the "hardest" hole so players will get strokes on the "hardest" holes on the course.

    • For example, if a player is a 10 handicap, he will receive 1 stroke on each of the 10 "hardest" holes.

  • After these strokes are applied, the result is your net score.

  • Maximum handicap is 27 strokes. This also means that players above 18 handicap will receive 2 strokes on some of the hardest holes.

What “Match Play” Means

  • Each hole is its own contest.

  • The team with the lower net Best Ball score wins that hole.

  • If the two teams have the same score, the hole is tied.

  • You do NOT add up total strokes like in normal golf, but instead you win or tie holes throughout the round.

Handicapping

  • You must have a handicap to play in the Farmers Cup

  • If you do not have a running handicap through GHIN, The Grint, USGA, etc. then you must play at least 4 rounds in 2026 before playing in the Farmers Cup to establish a handicap

  • There will be a max handicap of 27 strokes

  • Please enter your handicap in your Account Information page

Scoring

Every group in the round represents one match, and each match is worth 1 point.

Match Scoring

  • If one 2-person team wins more holes, that team earns 1 point.

  • Points are NOT awarded after each hole, but after each match.

    • For example, if you and your partner win 10 of the 18 holes, your team wins the match and gets 1 point.

  • If the match ends in a tie (9 holes each), both teams earn 0.5 points.

Team Points

  • Each team earns points from the matches in every round.

  • After all the rounds in the weekend are complete, each team’s points are added up.

  • The team with the most total points wins the Farmers Cup.

If you still don't understand...

  • Play your own ball the whole time and tell the smarter person in your group what you got on the hole.

  • Try to make the best score you can on every hole.

  • If you do well on the hole, it's likely you and your parter can win the hole.

  • Win holes → win your match → win points for your team.
